Severe necrotizing fasciitis in a human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.Olsen RJ, Burns KM, Chen L, Kreiswirth BN, Musser JM Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The Methodist Hospital, and Center for Molecular and Translational Human Infectious Diseases Research, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, Houston, TX 77030, USA. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a rarely reported cause of necrotizing fasciitis. We report an unusually severe case of MRSA necrotizing fasciitis in a previously undiagnosed AIDS patient. Molecular analysis revealed that the strain had the USA300/spa1 genotype, now an abundant cause of community-acquired MRSA infection. Published 10 March 2008 in J Clin Microbiol, 46(3): 1144-7.
